Kenya Harambee Stars inched closer to the 3rd round of Africa World Cup qualifiers after piping Namibia 1-0. All the Stars need is a draw at Guinea on Oct. 12th and they are in the 3rd round.  A loss would not eliminate the Stars as they are virtually guaranteed to sail through as one of the 8 best runners-up. It is great for Kenya football to be back on the map and hopefully the politicians will not screw this one. 2010 qualification will be a stretch but anything could happen.

Premier League

The 08/09 premier league season is underway and we can already hear the MAN U fans screaming 3peat. It is going to be hard to repeat as champions but if Man U does it they will arguably be the team of the decade. Don't believe the hype that some unfamiliar team will sneak through to win the title as it will come down to the big four. It's a crapshoot on who will pull it off. It usually comes down to head to head match-ups among the big four. Very rarely has any of the top four won the premier league without collecting more points in head to head match-ups. 2 early key match-ups to look out for is Man U versus Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday Sept 13th. It is a must win for Liverpool to be serious contenders. A draw will not suffice.

The 2nd early key match is on Sept 21st, Man U needs to collect at least a point from Chelsea especially if they don't get a result at Anfield.

Who do u think will win the premier league this year? Send us your thoughts and you could win a free Nagi Fun Pass at sportszone@nagievents.com or text 714-423-2872

Euros & South Africa 2010

Surprise! Surprise!! Spain wins the Euros and Kenya is doing well in the early stages of World cup qualifiers. Spain Euro win shouldn’t have come as a big surprise as they fielded one of the strongest line-ups in recent history with a proven goal scorer in Fernando.

Fernando Torres aka El Nino was primed to deliver for Spain after dominating the premier league and the champion’s league with Liverpool. Spain has clearly sent notice to the rest of the world for the 2010 world cup in South Africa.

Speaking of South Africa, Kenya is making some news with some good results despite the fiasco with the soccer management. Kenya has won 2, drawn 1, lost 1 and is tied for first place with Guinea in group 2. A win at home to Namibia (very possible) and a draw in Guinea (tough) will win the group for Harambee Stars. 2nd place in the group may still be good enough to get them in the next round of 20 teams divided in 5 groups. The 5 winners in each group qualify for the 2010 in South Africa. Can the Stars make it South Africa?? We think they will make the 3rd round as group winner or runners-up but South Africa is another story. The going gets tough in the 3rd round as it will be hard to avoid any of the big boys i.e. Egypt, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana etc. There is no margin of error or distractions which are plenty with the Kenya soccer administration. Do you think the Stars will make it to South Africa??

kings of Africa

Congratulations to the pharaohs of Egypt as they went back to back after beating Cameroon in a close final.

The Egyptians once again proved again that they are definitely the kings of Africa when it comes to soccer.

The only question is whether they can translate their unbelievable success in Africa to the World stage in South Africa.

Please check back for African world cup qualifiers updates!!!

2008 AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS EARLIER UPDATE

The much anticipated draw for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations took place on Oct. 19th in Accra Ghana.  The list of teams include Ghana (hosts), Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia and Zambia. The 2008 Africa Cup of Nations is gearing up to be one of the best tournaments in Africa and may be a prelude of things to come in 2010 in South Africa. There are no clear favorites but depending on how the draw shapes up, Ghana is most likely the team to beat.  Please check back for details on how the groups will shape up and for a complete breakdown of all the teams and predictions. Premier league update:

The surprise exit of Jose Mourinho from Chelsea coaching ranks is a story that is going to linger through out the season. It looks like a clash of strategy between the coach and the owner and someone had to go. Chelsea will miss Mourinho and more importantly the premier league will miss one of the most flamboyant and successful coach in recent history.  For fans of other teams Mourinho was the lightening rod, that made them hate Chelsea but deep down there was respect. You had to respect the warrior mentality of Mourinho and Chelsea. Hopefully the team will not lose that spirit coz they will need it to battle the likes of Liverpool and Man U.

Send your opinion to  sportszone@nagievents.com  and you may be featured in the weekly Nagi Events Sports Zone.

Be on the look-out for the Venue schedule as we continue to host Marquee games albeit early in the morning (4:30AM). Is there a specific game of interest to you or you just want to sound off, please drop us a few lines at sportszone@nagievents.com.

Brazil wins Copa again!!! Not a big surprise to most soccer fans outside Argentina as Brazil easily defended the Copa American Title. The 3-0 drubbing of Argentina was just mere confirmation of Brazil dominance over their arch rivals in the last few tournaments. If you read the press, Argentina was supposed to run away with the Copa but that's why they play the games. You just never know!! Honorable showing by Mexico by taking 3rd place over Uruguay.

In other sport news, it's heating up in Africa as some teams already book the places for Ghana 2008. Ghana (hosts), Angola, Cameroon, Morocco and Tunisia have already booked their spots and are just waiting for the draw to be held on Oct. 19th. The Kenyan national team endured another loss to the Eritrean national team and needless to say the Kenyan team is out of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
